1 Trump threatens more tariffs on China as global markets plunge
Undeterred by a stock market collapse that has continued for days, President Donald Trump threatened additional tariffs on China overnight, raising fresh concerns that his drive to rebalance the global economy could intensify a financially destructive trade war.
Trump's threat, which he delivered on social media, came after China said it would retaliate against US tariffs he announced last week.
2 Tornado downs trees, damages roofs in Levin as wild weather hits
Strong winds are battering parts of New Zealand, with heavy swells set for parts of the lower North Island and damage reported from a tornado which swept through Levin this morning.
3 Breakfast host's warning as AI gambling ad captures likeness
Breakfast presenter Jenny-May Clarkson has issued a warning after her likeness was used in an AI-generated video promoting what appeared to be a scam gambling website.
“I want to make it very clear that that wasn’t me speaking,” Clarkson said on Breakfast this morning.
She said the video’s use of her likeness shone a light on how Māori were being “targeted more and more” by gambling advertisements, making an “already serious problem worse”.
4 Renewed calls for recognition that many more were tortured in state care
There are renewed calls for the Government to recognise that many more survivors of abuse in state care were tortured beyond the group from Lake Alice psychiatric hospital.
Human rights lawyer Sonja Cooper told 1News that “even if we just look at the psychiatric hospitals, it is extremely arbitrary what the Government has done”.
“The Government has singled out the smallest cohort of people, pretty much put them on a pedestal to say, ‘Look, we’ve listened to the Royal Commission’ and is dishing them out huge payments, where people who suffered exactly the same treatment, but not in the Child and Adolescent Unit, are ignored."
5 From flowers to stalking: why the 'nice guy' narrative is dangerous
Being labelled a “nice guy” was once considered a form of flattery. Today, however, anyone privy to the world of dating and romance will know this isn’t necessarily a compliment.
We've all seen the movies where the persistent guy eventually wins the girl but with stalking and violent attitudes towards women prevalent, we need to change the script. By Jamilla Rosdahl
ONE RESURRECTED SPECIES
Three genetically engineered wolves that may resemble extinct dire wolves are trotting, sleeping and howling in an undisclosed secure location in the US, according to the company that aims to bring back lost species.
Dire wolves, which went extinct more than 10,000 years ago, are much larger than gray wolves, their closest living relatives today.
The wolf pups, which range in age from three to six months old, have long white hair, muscular jaws and already weigh in at around 36kg — on track to reach 63kg at maturity, researchers at Colossal Biosciences reported.
