Dog held at animal shelter after fatal Christchurch attack on young child

The dog that killed a one-year-old boy in a backyard attack last week was registered and had never come to the attention of authorities, Christchurch City Council says.

Sonny-Charles Watson, 1, died at a Basingstoke St property in the suburb of Aranui on Friday afternoon.

Christchurch City Council head of regulatory compliance Tracey Weston today confirmed the crossbreed was being held at the animal shelter while police investigated.

Auckland harbour crossing decision deferred to at least 2027

A decision on Auckland's second harbour crossing has been pushed out to at least 2027, with the Government ordering a new Crown-led business case and a fresh study of a Meola Reef option favoured by the city's mayor.

Transport Minister Chris Bishop announced this afternoon Cabinet would take control of the project and commission an "independently-led" business case due back next year.

That's despite NZTA endorsing a tunnel alignment as its preferred option.

Actor Hayden Panettiere dies, aged 36

American actor Hayden Panettiere has died.

Panettiere, who began her career as a child star in film and television, was best known for her roles as Claire Bennet on the TV series Heroes and Juliette Barnes in Nashville.

"It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden," the star's representative said in a statement to ABC News.
