'Preventable' Mt Maunganui landslide 'a systemic failure' says damning report
A review by a retired High Court judge has found six deaths caused by a landslide at a Mt Maunganui campsite could have been prevented.
Paul Davison KC’s damning report, released at 2pm today, said: “This tragedy was, in the end, preventable.”
Six people were killed when a large chunk of the maunga gave way after a night of heavy rain on January 22 this year, collapsing onto the neighbouring Mount Maunganui Beachside Holiday Park.

Kiwifruit labour company must pay $400,000 for exploiting migrant workers
A Bay of Plenty horticulture employer and its former director have been ordered to pay a combined $400,000 for the exploitation of migrant workers.
It comes after an investigation found that Indo Kiwi Horticulture Limited and its sole director, Boota Singh Dhillon, had underpaid workers, made them pay unlawful premiums, and denied them minimum employment entitlements.

A $20 million Powerball prize sold at a West Auckland store three weeks ago remains unclaimed.
Lotto NZ said the ticket was sold at Blockhouse Bay's Postshop & Stationers ahead of the Saturday, July 25 draw. The jackpot was $40 million, split between two winners.
