NZ and US to build major port on former military base in Cook Islands
The United States has thrown down the gauntlet in the Pacific revealing it’s to develop a deep sea port on a former military base in the Cook Islands – with New Zealand playing a core role and contributing to the cost.
The move, announced at the Pacific Islands Forum in Palau, comes as geopolitical tensions rise in the Pacific, with the US and China both exerting their influence.
Murder charges laid after pair fatally shot in South Auckland
A man has been charged with two counts of murder after two people were shot dead in South Auckland last week.
Police said the 30-year-old, who was previously speaking with investigators, was charged this morning over the incident in Wattle Downs.
Emergency services were called to the Gambare Place address at about 1.45pm on Thursday, responding to reports a man was at the property with a handgun and that a woman was injured.
