Wet start to spring as heavy rain warnings issued for central NZ

Heavy rain and possible snow are set to hit parts of central New Zealand as a large trough moves across the country today and Monday.

Metservice said the system would bring heavy rain to many areas, while snow could also effect mountain passes of the South Island.

"Please keep up to date with the latest forecasts," the forecaster said.

Orange heavy rain warnings were in place for the Tararua Range from tonight, as well as the Grey and Buller Districts and Nelson Lakes from today.

The wet start to spring comes as the Tararua District is prepping for the El Niño season, with residents being urged to get ready for strong wind events, wildfires and an increased risk of flooding.

Heavy rain watches were also in place across a wide stretch of central New Zealand today and Monday, including Taranaki about and north of Taranaki Maunga, The Ruahine Range, Tasman District west of Takaka, the south and east of Wellington and Wairarapa away from the Tararua Range.

The Canterbury High Country north of Mt Cook, southwestern Marlborough and the ranges of Westland north of Mt Cook National Park were also under watches.

Road snowfall warnings were in place for Lewis Pass (SH7), Arthur's Pass (SH73), Porters Pass (SH73), Lindis Pass (SH8) and Crown Range Road.
