Ministry moves to close Gloriavale school, cancels registration
The Ministry of Education has announced today it has cancelled Gloriavale's registration as a private school and is pressing ahead with plans to close the school where more than 80 students are enrolled.
The decision followed findings from a Special Review by the Education Review Office.
The Secretary for Education first told the school's leaders in December that she would be cancelling its registration over serious concerns for the physical and emotional safety of students.
All major banks hike floating mortgage rates
New Zealand's biggest banks have increased their floating home loan rates after the OCR was hiked by 25 basis points to 2.75% yesterday.
With inflation hitting 4.1% in the June quarter, the Reserve Bank's increase was widely expected by economists. The was the possibility of more increases, while inflation was forecast to reach the 1% to 3% target band by mid-2027 and the 2% target midpoint later next year.
Economic recovery was expected to strengthen and broaden following a period of "lacklustre" growth.
Police warn teens over 'very impressive, very illegal' modified bicycles
Waikato police say bicycles being fitted with petrol-powered engines are "very impressive, but very illegal", and urged the public to report any they saw.
In a post online, Morrinsville police initially wanted to highlight the dangers of bikes which had been fitted with petrol-powered engines, and were therefore illegal on New Zealand's roads.
After the post was put up, Acting Sergeant Ryan McKenzie from the Matamata-Piako Strategic Traffic Unit told 1News the creators had been identified as teens who hold a flair for engineering, but the bikes had not been seized yet.

UK television presenter Kirstie Allsopp has been flown to hospital and operated on after taking a fall during a family holiday in north Devon.
Allsopp, 55, was celebrating her birthday with her youngest son Oscar when she slipped on a muddy patch of a steep path on her way back from the beach.
