One person dies in house fire near Whitianga

One person has died following a house fire on the Coromandel Peninsula this morning, firefighters have confirmed.

Two crews were sent to the blaze in Wharekaho, near Whitianga, at around 2.23am on Thursday.

A Fire and Emergency NZ spokesperson told 1News a person had been found dead at the scene of the blaze. Police found a body inside the property.

"Two fire investigators are en route to the scene now."

Senior Sergeant Chris Painter said a scene guard had remained in place overnight.

"Police will be carrying out a scene examination at the house today, including working with fire investigators."

An occupant had raised the alarm and was being provided support.

St John said it responded with one ambulance.

Wharekaho is located just over 4km northeast of Whitianga, the second-largest town on the Coromandel Peninsula.
