'Safety-critical' emergency radio aerials damaged in council break-in

Thieves have damaged the cables for radio aerials at a Rangitīkei emergency management building, putting at risk the link the council uses to reach isolated rural communities during disasters.

The break-in happened between 4am and 8am on Saturday. Along with damaging the aerial cables, the culprits stole a time-lapse camera and downpipes, and damaged guttering and roof tiles.

A council spokesperson said the damage to the aerials was the most serious part of the incident.

"This is safety-critical equipment. If it isn't working properly when we need it, it has the potential to put people's lives at risk."

The UHF aerials operate community radios the council has handed out to rural and isolated communities. If the aerials fail, staff would not be able to broadcast or receive messages during an emergency.

The spokesperson said the radios also carried information the other way.

"Communities talk to us through these radios and provide intel and updates that help our team respond to their needs."

The council is asking anyone who saw suspicious activity around the building on Saturday morning, or who knows who might be involved, to contact the council or call Police on 105, quoting report number ON-2916284N.

It has also asked people to report any suspicious items for sale on Trade Me or Facebook Marketplace that could be linked to the theft.

"Stealing stuff is one thing. Messing with equipment that helps keep our rural communities safe during an emergency is another," the spokesperson said.
