Red-level rain warning follows storm north after Otago deluge

Severe weather has lashed parts of the South Island overnight and throughout Monday, with heavy rain causing widespread flooding and prompting warnings across several regions.

A rare red heavy rain warning has been lifted for coastal Dunedin and Clutha, but parts of Marlborough and Canterbury remained under the highest-level alert until Wednesday.

A state of emergency was declared in Waitaki, with the mayor saying some cars had to be abandoned this morning due to roads flooding.

Australian Prime Minister apologises for saying he'd 'shag' Kylie Minogue

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has apologised for comments he made about Kylie Minogue while playing a risque game during a podcast.

In an interview on the Bush Deep podcast, Albanese was asked by host Nikki Osborne if he would "shag, marry or date" Kylie Minogue, Nicole Kidman or Rhonda Burchmore.

The Labor prime minister initially avoided answering but, when pressed further by the host, he answered: "Oh Kylie, clearly .... all of the above."

'Extensive damage' after car crashes into central Auckland building

A car has crashed into a central Auckland building, causing "extensive damage", after a two-vehicle collision at a busy intersection.

Emergency services were called to the intersection of New North and Mount Eden roads at about 12.10pm on Monday after reports of a two-vehicle crash, with one vehicle colliding with a nearby building.

Footage from the scene showed the front of the vehicle lodged into the building, with smashed glass and debris scattered across the footpath.
