Live: State of emergency declared for Waitaki District as heavy rain hits

What you need to know:

  • A rare red heavy rain warning remains in place for coastal Dunedin and Clutha until around 10am this morning.
  • A state of emergency has been declared in Waitaki. 
  • Up to 120mm of rain is forecast and risks of flooding, slips and dangerous river conditions. 
  • Civil Defence said on Sunday the heavy rainfall forecast arrived earlier than expected, and Dunedin's Civil Defence bunker was been activated.
  • Fire and Emergency New Zealand received 65 callouts overnight from Mosgiel through to Oamaru, and urged residents to evacuate if they felt unsafe.
