What you need to know:
- A rare red heavy rain warning remains in place for coastal Dunedin and Clutha until around 10am this morning.
- A state of emergency has been declared in Waitaki.
- Up to 120mm of rain is forecast and risks of flooding, slips and dangerous river conditions.
- Civil Defence said on Sunday the heavy rainfall forecast arrived earlier than expected, and Dunedin's Civil Defence bunker was been activated.
- Fire and Emergency New Zealand received 65 callouts overnight from Mosgiel through to Oamaru, and urged residents to evacuate if they felt unsafe.
