Weather live: State of Emergency declared, missing Wellington man named

A red heavy rain warning has been issued for Wellington and Wairarapa from 2pm on Monday until 9pm on Tuesday.

Record-breaking torrential rain has caused flooding in several Wellington suburbs and in parts of the central city in the early hours of this morning.

Wellington Mayor Andrew Little said he had "never known anything like" the rain overnight and said he had received no warning of flooding risk.

Christopher Luxon confronts caucus discontent after hitting lowest poll result as leader

Christopher Luxon says a handful of his National MPs may be behind damaging leaks about his leadership, as the Prime Minister vowed he would not step down "no matter what happens" before November's election.

In a round of morning interviews, Luxon conceded he and his party needed to do better after last night's 1News Verian poll suggested National could drop to its worst result under his leadership and put the coalition government out of power.

Hastings residents have described their "shock" at a triple homicide investigation being launched in their otherwise "quiet" street.

Two children and a woman died at the property on Avenue Rd, while man who lived at the property was having surgery today.
