Auckland's Ponsonby has been named one of the world's "coolest neighbourhoods" by UK publication Time Out.
Ranked a respectable 33rd, the inner-city suburb made the 40-strong list due to its "creative culture" and wide range of restaurant options.
It joins the likes of Chicago's Hyde Park and Osaka's Dotonbori, touted as "the greatest places for fun, food, culture and community".
Time Out contributor Petrina Darrah acknowledged the impact of "artists, bohemians and Pacific Peoples" who called the suburb home throughout the 1960s and 1970s. Their contribution made Ponsonby the creative hotspot Aucklanders know it as today, despite being "drastically reshaped" by gentrification.
The neighbourhood was also commended for its many eateries showcasing Auckland's diverse cultural makeup.
"Ponsonby thrums with activity round the clock: in the mornings you’ll spot locals picking up loaves of sourdough from Daily Bread, in the evenings they’ll be heading out for cocktails at speakeasy-styled Deadshot bar," Darrah wrote.
Franklin Road's "locally famous" Christmas lights also got a mention, with Darrah lauding it as a display of "festive community spirit".
Time Out's annual ranking is compiled by asking thousands of city-dwellers around the world what their favourite spots are.
Taking out the top spot on 2023's list of coolest streets was Laureles, in Medellín, Colombia, known for its famed nightlife strip La 70.
The Colombian neighbourhood topped the rankings due to its vibrant bar and restaurant scene, tranquil parks and tree-filled streets, while maintaining a "traditional" feel despite its rapidly growing popularity.
Coming in second was Dublin's Smithfield, with the Irish neighbourhood representing "the Dublin that refuses to disappear", and third place went to Carabanchel in Madrid, Spain, known for its art galleries and tapas spots.
It's not the first time a New Zealand neighbourhood has gotten the nod. Auckland suburb Kingsland came in at 43rd on the list in 2022, praised for its "general bohemian vibe" and hospitality scene.
Auckland's Karangahape Road was also recognised on Time Out's list of "coolest streets" last year, named as the city's "bohemian heart".
