What you need to know
- Two states of local emergency have been declared in the Manawatū-Whanganui region, for the Whanganui District and Ōhura ward after rain triggered flooding, slips, evacuations and state highway closures overnight.
- Flooding was expected around 1pm in low‑lying parts of Whanganui, including Anzac Parade, Taupō Quay and Pūtiki.
- Homes have been damaged and power has been cut in Tauranga's Welcome Bay due to a tornado.
- Multiple weather warnings and watches have been issued by MetService.
