A man shot by police during an armed standoff in West Auckland earlier this week has been charged with multiple offences.

Police were called to a property in Massey at around 7.49pm on Wednesday after reports a man was allegedly in possession of a long-barrelled firearm and had it pointed at a neighbour.

The Armed Offenders Squad entered the property shortly before 11pm, where the 55-year-old man was shot by police.

In an update this evening, Acting Superintendent Matt Laurenson, Waitematā District Commander, confirmed the man had since been charged with threatening to kill, assaulting a person with a weapon and presenting a firearm at a person.

He appeared in the Waitākere District Court today via a bedside hearing and was remanded in custody.

“He underwent surgery yesterday and is now in a stable condition,” Laurenson said.

“I want to acknowledge the staff involved in this incident who have worked in difficult circumstances to ensure this matter could be resolved.”

A police critical incident investigation remained ongoing, alongside a separate investigation by the Independent Police Conduct Authority.
