A single Angus bull has sold for $220,000 at auction in Gisborne today, setting what industry figures say is a new Australasian record and marking the second time in a week the benchmark price has been surpassed.
The bull, auctioned at the Kaharau Angus sale during the Gisborne-East Coast Bull Week, was bought by a syndicate of New Zealand breeders alongside an Australian stud, reflecting continued cross-Tasman demand for elite beef genetics.
The price exceeded the previous $168,000 sale set just days earlier by Taimate Angus.
Historically, New Zealand stud cattle have only occasionally surpassed the six-figure mark. Prices above $100,000 have been rare, with most sales clustered well below that level, even in strong years.
Angus NZ general manager Jane Allan said the record-breaking results this season demonstrated the value farmers placed on quality genetics.
"Farmers continue to invest in genetics that deliver a balance of fertility, growth, structural soundness and longevity, and that confidence is clearly being reflected in sale rings throughout the country," she said.
“The fact that the Australasian record has been broken twice within a matter of days speaks volumes about the strength of Angus NZ genetics and the demand for cattle that can deliver long-term value in commercial farming."
