Shortland Street has received a shot in the arm with confirmation the medical soap is expanding to four nights a week.
Now in its 35th year, the show will return in 2027 and increase from its current three nights a week thanks to funding confirmed today by NZ On Air, together with the Screen Production Rebate.
The four weekly episodes begin in February 2027, screening on TVNZ 2 and streaming on TVNZ+.
Other TVNZ shows to receive funding include Country Calendar, which marked its 60th anniversary this year, Celebrity Treasure Island and My Family Mystery.
TVNZ said Shortland Street remained one of the country’s “most recognisable and loved” programmes. Expanding to four nights a week, delivered with a reduced request for public funding, reflected the strength of the show’s commercial momentum and enduring audience loyalty.
TVNZ Chief News and Content Officer Nadia Tolich said NZ on Air’s continued support helped keep the popular series on screens.
“Audiences have a long‑standing connection with Shortland Street, and we’re excited to bring the much-loved drama back in 2027 with an expanded four‑night‑a‑week schedule that reflects both its significance within our content slate and its popularity with viewers.”
South Pacific Pictures produces Shortland Street and its chief executive Kelly Martin said the company was “immensely proud” of the show’s continuing legacy.
“This last season has seen both cast and crew deliver some of their best work, and NZ audiences are enjoying the ride. Returning to four nights a week is something we’re all delighted about, and we look forward to continuing to entertain and delight New Zealanders.”
Shortland Street first debuted in 1992, initially screening five nights a week. This was reduced to three nights a week in 2025.
