The Live Draw will determine which preliminary pool each qualifying kapa will join at Te Matatini o Ngā Taniwha 2027, hosted by Tainui at Hopuhopu in Waikato.

The draw, due to start at 10am and last for just over an hour, will also decide when each kapa will perform in each day’s order.

Te Matatini is our national kapa haka competition, made up of 13 regions across Aotearoa and Australia.

Every two years, each region holds its own qualifying competition.

The kapa selected through those regional competitions advance to the following year’s national Te Matatini.

In 2026, 57 kapa qualified to compete at Hopuhopu in 2027.

A key change for 2027 is in the seeding. The Top 12 continue to be seeded, as they have been in previous draws.

But the kapa ranked 13th to 20th are now also spread across the four pools. This reduces the chance of too many highly ranked kapa ending up in the same pool.
