A detector dog named Hunter has amazed his handlers after discovering a series of illegal imports just 15 minutes into the final shift of his detector career.
According to a statement on the Ministry for Primary Industries' Detector Dogs social media, suspicious luggage was no match for Hunter, who made four separate interceptions from a single baggage carousel round.
The veteran detector's astonishing haul included "four boiled chicken eggs, two bananas, pork and chicken sausages, chicken feet, duck feet, necks, and tongue, quail eggs, a kiwifruit, and a whole head of raw garlic".
To celebrate his hard last day at work, nine-year-old Hunter was treated to a celebratory final run, which ended with a helping of chicken nuggets.
Now retired, Hunter has been adopted by his original handler, who worked alongside the dog from 2018-2025.
He was given a send-off by his MPI colleagues, who wished him all the best for his future.
"Enjoy your retirement Hunter, you’ve earned it," MPI said.
