Witness describes 'scary' hot air balloon crash in Methven

A witness has described the "scary" moment a hot air balloon crashed down into trees in Canterbury's Methven this morning.

Around 10 hot air balloons were launched shortly before 8.30am from the showgrounds on Methven Chertsey Rd to celebrate the return of Methven's Fire & Ice festival.

Two people were injured, and St John said one person was taken a local medical centre in a minor condition.

Woman 'disgusted' her autistic sister, 11, was restrained and injected

The whānau of an 11-year-old girl with autism who was mistaken for an adult mental health patient, before being restrained and injected with anti-psychotic drugs, have spoken out for the first time.

It comes as two new reports – one from the Ministry of Health’s Director of Mental Health and the other from the Health and Disability Commission – conclude some actions against the child were unlawful and her rights were breached.

The girl, who is Māori, was mistaken for a 20-year-old woman and, although she acted in a childlike manner, was restrained and medicated as an adult despite showing no risk of immediate harm to herself or others.

Govt wants local NZ apps on TV screens by default

The Government has announced it wants TVNZ+, Sky's ThreeNow and other local streaming apps front and centre on all TVs sold locally — and it intends to force electronics manufacturers to comply.

The decision lands as the local media industry grapples with a longer-term shift away from linear broadcast transmission towards internet-only delivery — and concerns that future TVs could otherwise arrive with no New Zealand content by default.

Media Minister Paul Goldsmith said the requirement would apply to manufacturers importing TVs into New Zealand, with the apps needing to be easy to find.
