Loaded gun in child's bedroom found during Northland methamphetamine raids
A loaded pistol hidden in a backpack in a child's bedroom is among the "seriously concerning findings" from a major police operation that has dismantled a methamphetamine manufacturing and distribution network in remote parts of Northland.
Fourteen people have been arrested under Operation Phoenix, led by the National Organised Crime Group, following a year-long investigation into the alleged manufacture and supply of methamphetamine in the Far North.
Three police officers face objectionable material charges
Three police officers are facing multiple charges of possessing objectionable material.
The charges come after police launched a rapid review of information security controls, triggered by the scandal surrounding the former deputy commissioner Jevon McSkimming.
This morning, Deputy Commissioner Tim Anderson said two Auckland-based constabulary staff would appear in the Manukau District Court "over the coming days".
Passerby spotted collapsing train bridge that was still open - inquiry
An inundated Canterbury rail bridge was closed to train traffic only after a member of the public noticed one of its piers had collapsed, an investigation has found.
No train was crossing bridge 57 on the main south line over the Rangitata River when a pier gave way in April 2024, but the near-miss has prompted a Transport Accident Investigation Commission probe into how KiwiRail manages flood risks.
KiwiRail had not closed the line, used primarily by freight trains, and the damage was only discovered when a passerby on the adjacent road spotted it and raised the alarm.
