Time for a tax refund – or a bill: All you need to know

Every year around this time, Inland Revenue quietly does the maths on whether New Zealanders paid the right amount of tax — and, for many, that means an unexpected deposit showing up in their bank account.

With the financial year having closed on March 31, Inland Revenue is now reconciling the books. Underpay, and you'll get a bill. Overpay — as many do — and a refund is on its way.

'Serious exploitation': Company charged migrant $45,000 for a lawn-mowing job

An Auckland company has been ordered by the Employment Relations Authority to pay back the $45,000 it charged a migrant worker for a job.

In condemning the "serious exploitation", a Labour Inspectorate investigator said: "A person who came here seeking a new life was charged a significant sum for a work opportunity that should have been free."

Fire at Christopher Luxon's electorate office treated as suspicious

Police say a small fire at Prime Minister Christopher Luxon's electorate office in East Auckland on Wednesday morning is being treated as suspicious.

Crews were called to the office on Millhouse Dr, Botany at 9.30am after a small fire broke out at the rear of the building.
