A person has died and five others have been injured after a speeding vehicle collided with another car in Waipā last night.
Police said they observed a black BMW speeding on Arapuni Rd, between Kihikihi and Pukeatua, at around 8.40pm.
Officers turned their vehicle around and activated red and blue lights, after which the vehicle collided with another, Acting Waikato District Commander Will Loughrin said.
Two people in the speeding vehicle were seriously injured and two other passengers in the same vehicle sustained minor injuries.
The driver of the second vehicle was killed in the crash. Their passenger was also seriously injured.
"We are offering support to the family of the deceased, as well as the staff who were involved," Loughrin said.
"Police are seeking anyone who has witnessed or who may have dashcam or CCTV footage of the events leading up to the crash."
Anyone with information has been asked to contact police on 105.
Multiple investigations were underway to determine the circumstances behind the "tragic incident", he said.
The Independent Police Conduct Authority has been notified.
