A man has been arrested and charged after an alleged assault on a train in Auckland which left one person injured.

Police were called to reports of disorderly behaviour on a train near Mt Albert Station about midday yesterday.

Detective Senior Sergeant Rebecca Kirk said one person was reported to have sustained injuries during the incident.

"Inquiries are ongoing to understand the circumstances of the disorder but there is not believed to be any threat to public safety," she said.

A 39-year-old man was taken into custody and charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

He was due to appear in the Auckland District Court today.

The incident caused initial delays across the East West and Onehunga West lines.

In a statement, Auckland Transport said it was concerned to hear about the incident.

"Every single person who travels on AT’s bus, train and ferry services deserves to travel safely," the agency said.

"Aucklanders take more than 1.8 million trips on public transport each week and incidents like these are rare and a reflection of broader society, but are totally unacceptable to our team at AT and the communities we serve."

Auckland Transport said it would support emergency services as they investigated the incident.
