Attempted murder charge after child hurt in Auckland park assault

Footage captured by 1News shows police cordons in the central Auckland park.

A 20-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder after a child was seriously injured in an assault at central Auckland’s Myers Park yesterday.

The child remains in Starship Children’s Hospital in a serious but stable condition, while the man, who was taken into custody at the scene, is in hospital in a serious condition with self-inflicted injuries.

Superintendent Sunny Patel said emergency services were called to the central city park at about 4.45pm on Sunday after reports of a serious assault.

“The 20-year-old has been charged with attempted murder in relation to the assault on the child. The child’s family have been advised and are being supported.”

Police said shortly after the attack that the child had been assaulted by an “unknown man”.

St John sent two ambulances, a rapid response vehicle and an operations manager, while officers cordoned off an area around the park’s children’s playground and turned away people trying to walk through.

Police have since completed their scene examination, and Patel said there was no ongoing risk to the public.

“Police are not seeking anyone else in relation to the incident.”

Police are appealing for anyone who saw what happened, or who has photos or video, to come forward. Information can be given by calling 105 or online at 105.police.govt.nz, quoting file number 261025/2283.
