Police have released the name of the man who died at Karioitahi beach last week.
He was 26-year-old Ali Hayder Hadi, of Te Atatū Peninsula.
Police were called to Kariotahi Beach at around 7.10pm on Monday, December 8 to reports of two men "experiencing difficulties in the water and struggling to return to shore".
Surf Life Saving's Search and Rescue team responded with one rescue watercraft and two inflatable rescue boats. A police Eagle helicopter also attended.
Police said Hadi had been at the beach with his brother and friends when they got into difficulty.
While his brother was able to get back to safety, Hadi was brought to the shore but could not be revived despite assistance from first responders.
The death has been referred to the Coroner.
