Air and sea search for overdue kayaker in Auckland's Manukau Harbour

The kayaker had set off from Mill Bay, near Cornwallis on the harbour’s northern shore, earlier in the day.

A search is underway near the mouth of Auckland's Manukau Harbour for a kayaker reported overdue by a family member.

The kayaker had set off from Mill Bay, near Cornwallis on the harbour’s northern shore, earlier in the day.

Coastguard’s National Operations Centre was alerted about 2.30pm, and police said emergency services responded around 3pm.

Police Maritime is leading the search, supported by the Police Eagle helicopter, the Auckland Westpac Rescue Helicopter and Auckland Airport’s rescue hovercraft. Volunteers from Coastguard Titirangi and Coastguard Waiuku are also searching the harbour entrance.

A Coastguard spokesperson said the organisation was thinking of the kayaker’s family.

“Our thoughts are with the kayaker’s whānau at this worrying time.”
