Man dies after being swept out to sea, north of Timaru

A man has died after being swept out to sea, north of Timaru this afternoon.

Emergency services were called to the beach at Seadown, at 4.30pm.

A young child was found in the water when they arrived. The child was brought to shore, where they were treated by Ambulance staff.

A helicopter continued the search for the missing man in the treacherous conditions, with the crew finding him dead a short time later.

The matter will be referred to the Coroner.
