Jacinda Ardern has shared a joke with reporters after making Forbes Magazine's list of the World's Most Powerful Women and the Most Powerful Female Political Leaders of 2017.

Ms Ardern, who was sworn in as prime minister last Thursday, comes in at number 13 out of the Top 22 Most Powerful Women in Politics, and 38 in the Top 100, but isn't letting it go to her head.

"I definitely don't think it's going to change the expectation that I still unload the dishwasher at home," she joked with reporters in Christchurch today.

"Also I think it does reflect that there's a need for us to have more women in politics and positions of influence and power globally.

"I'm certainly flattered by being included in the list but I'd like to see a lot more women in contention," Ms Ardern also said about the accolade.

When asked what she thought about being above US politician Hillary Clinton on the list she said: "I haven't spent too much time reflecting on relative position, flattered to be there but my focus is what I can do to earn the place that I've been humbled enough to take on for just a week now and to earn it amongst New Zealanders."

Ms Ardern was in Christchurch today at Hornby High School, where she spoke to Year 12 and 13 students, as well as meeting people who have experienced of mental illness, earthquake trauma and social isolation.
