A Melbourne man has "dodged a bullet" after being hit by a car while riding his bike, sending him flying into the air then smashing down onto the road.

9 News reported Matt Atherton, 38, was biking home on September 9 when a car slammed into him from behind.

CCTV footage shows Mr Atherton being flung into the air.

"I should be dead," Mr Atherton said.

"I cannot believe I'm here, but I'm here. Boy he hit me hard."

The father of two sustained a broken shoulder blade, had knee surgery and needed stitches on his face, 9 NEWS reported.

Police said the driver had not committed an offence and assisted police with inquiries.
