'Snow showers' forecast for some South Island roads

Autumn colours with a sprinkling of snow in Aoraki Mount Cook National Park.

Some road snowfall warnings have been extended until Friday as MetService expects snow to accumulate on some South Island roads overnight.

This afternoon, the forecaster issued road snowfall warnings for Lewis Pass (SH7), Arthur's Pass (SH73), Crown Range Rd and Milford Road (SH94) - all due to expire by Friday afternoon.

MetService meteorologist John Law said it was a "cooler feeling day" which would bring some snowfall over the higher mountain passes.

"For Friday, it's a similar story," he said. "Another front makes its way up the country, bringing the risk of one or two rumbles of thunder, perhaps even something a little bit sharper around the eastern coast of Canterbury, up towards Marlborough, and even Wairarapa again for later in the day." Law explained.

Earlier this week, many parts of the South Island were hit by heavy rain and severe gales on Monday, as the active front moved up the country.
