Doctors warn against 'pain free' full-body Bali tattoo trend

A new "pain free" tattoo trend is concerning doctors in Australia as a growing number of people travel to Bali in Indonesia to be inked under general anaesthetic.

Thousands of Australians have reportedly flocked to Bali regions such as Kuta and Legian this year to receive the procedure, which can have up to nine tattoo artists working on a person at a time.

Madhe from Madhe Ink in Kuta told 9News the whole body could be completed in just one or two sessions.

"Let's say [an] arm [or] leg, that could be finished in 10 hours - that's quick," he explained.

The artist said prospective clients first have to go through two medical check-ups before being allowed to go under general anaesthesia, which includes a form and a medical examination.

He said the anaesthesia was also administered by doctors and nurses in a hospital operation room rather than the tattoo shop itself.

Australian doctors hold concerns over safety standards in Bali, and worried the practice added unnecessary risk to what should be a simple procedure.

"It's safer to make sure you avoid things like this. An anaesthetic just for convenience is a dangerous proposition, and not one I think you should entertain," said Australian Medical Association's Dr Kyle Hoath.

Other Australians in Bali weren't convinced.

"Seems like a lot on the body to have that much tattooed and to heal all at once," said one woman.

Another woman said: "I would like to be awake, and wanting to know what is happening to my body - but each to their own."

High costs were also a factor contributing to the trend, with Australian studios charging tens of thousands for a full body tattoo over months or even years.

Wheras in Kuta, under general, it could be brought down to about AU$16,000 (NZ$19,700) and be completed in about 20 hours.
