Routine traffic stop turns into surprise baby delivery in Victoria

Baby Ashlee with her parents reunited with the officers who helped bring her into the world.

A routine traffic stop has turned into a surprise baby delivery on the side of a highway for two officers in south-west Victoria.

Sergeant Liam Cook and Constable Angus Hill had pulled over a car on the Princes Highway at Dennington near Warrnambool at 2.20am last Monday.

But as the officers approached the vehicle, the driver jumped out and asked the pair an unexpected question: "Are you any good at catching babies?"

Mum-to-be Jamie-Lee was in labour – and the baby wasn't prepared to wait.

The officers quickly jumped into action, calling for an ambulance and gathering blankets and medical equipment.

Just 90 seconds later, baby Ashlee made her grand entrance on the side of the road.

This week, Cook and Hill were reunited with Ashlee and her parents.

Cook said hearing Ashlee cry for the first time and knowing she was safe was a feeling he and Hill would never forget.

For the two officers, it was a reminder that policing could bring the most unexpected moments, and that sometimes being in the right place at the right time made all the difference.
