One person is in a critical condition and another is seriously injured after an assault in central Auckland’s Myers Park on Sunday afternoon.
A 20-year-old man has been taken into custody, with Inspector Jim Wilson saying the victim had been assaulted by an "unknown man".
Emergency services received a report of an assault at around 4.45pm on Sunday.
Both were taken to Auckland City Hospital, though 1News understands one was taken to Starship Children’s Hospital, suggesting the victim is under 15.
St John said two ambulances, a rapid response vehicle, and an operations manager responded.
Wilson said both the victim and the alleged offender required medical treatment.
“This was an isolated incident, and there is no ongoing risk to the public."
Multiple officers cordoned off an area around the park’s children’s playground and turned away people trying to walk through the scene.
Auckland Central MP Chlöe Swarbrick said she had been in touch with police following the "serious assault".
"The alleged perpetrator is in police custody, and more will be shared through official police channels as appropriate, but for now, they have asked me to ensure our community knows that the response was swift and there is no ongoing threat."
Myers Park runs parallel to upper Queen St, between Karangahape Rd and Mayoral Dr.
