A 55-year-old man is in serious condition after being shot by police in west Auckland overnight.
Officers had earlier responded to emergency calls that the man was in possession of a long-barrelled weapon on Mānutewhau Rd in Massey just before 8pm.
Further reports suggested the man has pointed the weapon at a neighbour, Waitematā District Commander Acting Superintendent Matt Laurenson said.

Police established a cordon around the property believed to be occupied by the alleged offender.
"While cordons were established, the man has discharged a long-barrelled weapon towards police officers, however no police staff were struck or suffered any injuries," Laurenson said.
Negotiators attempted to engage with the man, but he refused to comply with officers attempting to take him into custody.
Police used sponge rounds and a Taser during the the stand-off, but they had no effect on the man, and his behaviour continued to escalate.
"The armed offenders squad moved forward at 10.49pm and entered the address, and the man was subsequently shot by police," Laurenson said.
The 55-year-old man was taken into custody and treated by St John's staff who transported him to Auckland City Hospital.
He was in a serious but not life-threatening condition, and surgery would be carried out today.
"Having to use a firearm is the last thing any police officer wants to do, and in this instance our officers had no other option available,” Acting Superintendent Laurenson said.
"I acknowledge the staff involved in last night’s incident who have worked in difficult circumstances to ensure this matter could be resolved.

"The man remains under police guard and charges will be laid over this incident."
As standard procedure, police have established a critical incident investigation and the Independent Police Conduct Authority has been notified.
"Support is being offered to the man’s family as well as our staff involved last night," Laurenson said.
Locals in Massey, particularly Mānutewhau Road, could expect to see an increased police presence in the area today, as the scene examination continued.
1News footage from the scene last night showed police officers, including the armed offenders squad, and St John at the incident.
A St John spokesperson said it sent one ambulance, one rapid response vehicle and one operation manager shortly before 8pm.
A police cordon remained in place this morning.
