A teenage motorcyclist has been charged after allegedly pushing a man walking on New Plymouth's Coastal Walkway onto nearby rocks, suffering serious injuries.

Around 7am on September 29, the victim had been walking on the 12.7km-long path along the coast when he was assaulted.

"The victim was pushed onto nearby rocks and suffered serious injuries," Inspector Mark Miller said.

"The offender was also aggressive to members of the public who witnessed the incident before speeding off."

Officers found the victim "bleeding and in pain" and he was taken to hospital.

"The victim has been shaken from the incident but is expected to recover from their injuries," Miller said.

A 17-year-old boy was arrested after witnesses provided descriptions of his appearance.

A distinctive motorcycle he was riding during the alleged assault was impounded for 10 days.

The teenager was charged with wounding with intent to cause injury and had been going through a youth justice process.

He was next due to appear in the New Plymouth Youth Court on Monday, November 23.

The Coastal Walkway is a shared path for walkers and cyclists. Motorcycles are not permitted to be ridden on the path.
