US actor Selma Blair has been arrested and taken to hospital after allegedly suffering a "medical emergency" and attacking two flight attendants aboard a flight from Los Angeles to New York.

Airport officials said they responded to a report of "a physically abusive passenger" on Delta Airlines flight 938 travelling from Los Angeles to New York on Sunday evening (local time).

The New York Port Authority said two flight attendants were hurt and one was taken to hospital.

According to local media, one of the flight attendants was reportedly bitten by the 54-year-old actor best known for her roles in films Legally Blonde, Hellboy and Cruel Intentions.

Air traffic control audio obtained by CBS included the pilot calling for medical personnel to come to the plane, citing a "bloody nose as well as some bite marks".

Blair's attorney said she "experienced a medical emergency that led to the alleged conduct".

"Upon landing, she received immediate medical attention and is currently in stable condition," they said.

The attorney did not specify what the medical emergency was.

The FBI said it was looking into a "potential assault" that took place on the plane.

Blair remained in custody, and it was unclear whether she would face charges relating to the incident.

She was travelling with her service dog, which was also in the custody of her attorney.

Blair largely retreated from film work after receiving a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis (MS) in 2018.

In 2016, she had another incident on a flight after a drunken outburst caused two nurses to have to subdue her on board.

She issued a public apology after the 2016 incident, saying she had accidentally mixed her medication with alcohol and "made a big mistake" that caused her to "black out" and "say and do things that I deeply regret".

In 2021, she announced she was in remission for the disease, and in her 2022 memoir, she also has a chapter called "Bite Me" where she wrote about past instances where she bit other celebrities while drinking.
