Break-in turns violent as alleged burglar ends up injured

Shadow of hand of person

An alleged burglar was critically injured after a resident fought back during an attempted robbery at a property in Auckland's Papatoetoe.

Counties Manukau CIB Detective Inspector Karen Bright said officers were notified of a person who had been injured at an address on Coates Rd shortly after 4am.

"An offender is believed to have unlawfully entered the property and assaulted an occupant," she said.

"Another occupant at the address has come to the victim's aid, and during an altercation the offender sustained serious injuries."

St John said it sent one ambulance.

"One patient was assessed at the scene and transported to Middlemore Hospital in a critical condition," a St John spokesperson said.

Bright said those involved were known to each other, and a 31-year-old man was arrested for breaching bail - with further charges to follow.

"Inquiries are ongoing into the circumstances surrounding the report," Bright added.
