'Significant disruption': Christchurch man arrested over EV charger thefts

EVs are increasing the use of electricity in some households.

A Christchurch man has been charged following a spate of alleged thefts targeting electric vehicle charging stations across the city.

Canterbury rural area commander Inspector Peter Cooper said police had received numerous reports of charging cables being cut and stolen from stations in recent weeks.

“The offending has caused significant disruption to EV users and substantial costs to charging network providers through damage and replacement of infrastructure," he said.

“Police have been working closely with victims and industry partners to identify and locate those responsible to hold them to account."

A 26-year-old man was arrested and faced multiple charges, including five counts of theft over $2000.

He was due to appear in the Christchurch District Court tomorrow.

Despite the arrest, Cooper said were continuing to investigate other incidents across Christchurch and had not ruled out further arrests.

He urged anyone who had noticed any suspicious activity around EV charging stations, or had information about stolen equipment, to contact police via 105.
