The first of two friendly matches between the Football Ferns and Panama has been called off after two powerful earthquakes struck the region yesterday.

In a statement, Panama's football federation (FEPAFUT) confirmed the match had been cancelled following discussions with the country's national sports authority, Pandeportes.

"The decision was made as a preventative measure and prioritising the safety of the players, the staff of both teams, the fans and all of the people involved," the statement read.

The game was due to be played at Estadio Rommel Fernández Gutiérrez in Panama City at 10am today (NZT).

It was due to be the first game of a two-match series, with the second still scheduled to go ahead on October 14 at 1.30pm.

Two 7.7 and 6.6 magnitude quakes struck Panama shortly before 7am, causing buildings to collapse and triggering evacuations in the region.

The National Emergency Management Agency confirmed there was no threat of a tsunami for New Zealand following the quakes.

New Zealand Football released a statement on social media yesterday confirming all Football Ferns players and staff had been accounted for.

"New Zealand Football is in contact with local authorities, team management and match organisers and will continue to monitor the situation," it said.

"Should there be any further updates, New Zealand Football will provide them through its official channels."
