Death of man found unresponsive in Dunedin remains unexplained

The death of a man found unresponsive on a Dunedin street this week remains unexplained after a post-mortem examination failed to determine a cause.

Emergency services were called to Leckhampton Ct at around 11pm on Wednesday, where a man was found unresponsive.

"Despite efforts to revive the man, he was pronounced deceased a short time later," police said.

Detective Senior Sergeant Hayden Smale today said the post-mortem examination had been completed, but the results had not established a cause of death.

"Further enquiries attempting to establish the circumstances will be undertaken over the weekend," he said.

Anyone who saw anything unusual in the Leckhampton Ct area between 8pm and 11pm on Wednesday was encouraged to contact police via 105 using file number 261001/3548.

Investigators were also seeking CCTV of dashcam footage from the area during that timeframe.

Witness describes finding friend

Local Roderick Woods earlier told 1News he found the man, who was one of his friends, and called 111.

Woods said he had seen a person walking down the end of the road "arguing" and holding a piece of wood.

"He went under the bridge here, and I then went to the bathroom and came back to my room, and it was pretty quiet after that. Then I saw a body lying on the ground after coming back from the bathroom," he recalled.

Woods said the man had blood on his face but he did not know the extent of his injuries.

"I have not been to sleep at all. It's hit a lot of me, really."

Police cordoned off the area yesterday as investigators examined the scene.

Woods described his friend as "a really good person" and said he was "just so sorry for the family right now".
