A local woman and her seven-month-old baby have been named as the two people killed in a crash near Kaitāia in August.

Waihue Susan Epiha, 35, and seven-month-old Huhana Te Waiora Goodwin-Epiha died after the two-vehicle crash on the evening of August 26 on Oruru Rd near Jason Rd in Peria.

"Police extend our deepest condolences to their whānau and friends during this incredibly difficult time," police said when their names were released.

In a Facebook post about the "tragic passing", an associate of the family described the news as "so sad" and paid tribute.

"We love you Waihue, we love you mokopuna Huhana," they said.

Two others were injured in the crash and taken to hospital.

Police inquiries into the circumstances of the crash remain ongoing.
