Public toilets in two popular coastal areas in Northland are temporarily closed after being hit by copper thieves overnight on Tuesday.
The Far North District Council said the theft of copper pipes from the toilets at Tii Beach in Paihia and nearby Te Haumi had forced the closure of both facilities, leaving locals and visitors to the areas short of facilities.
Plumbers had been arranged by the council to replace the missing and damaged pipework.
"The repairs will not include copper pipes," the council said. "The facilities will reopen as soon as the repairs are completed."
The council acknowledged the inconvenience the closures may cause and thanked the community for its patience while repairs were carried out.
The council maintained 75 public toilets at locations throughout the Far North.
