Four people are facing a raft of charges after seriously injuring an elderly man and his dog during a burglary in Kaikohe.
Northland CIB Detective Sergeant Bart Graham said the violent offending occurred at a residential address on Cottage Court on September 13.
Graham said officers - and the armed offenders squad - searched a property in Kaikohe yesterday.
"Four suspects were located at the property and three were immediately arrested.
"One male attempted to flee on foot, but was quickly arrested," he added.
Three men, aged 19, 21 and 39, were charged with aggravated burglary; wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm; assault with intent to injure; possession of an offensive weapon; and assaults person with a weapon.
They have been remanded in custody and would reappear in Kaikohe District Court on October 27.
A 17-year-old male was charged with aggravated burglary; wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm; assault with intent to injure; possession of an offensive weapon; assaults person with a weapon; and cruelty/ill-treatment of an animal.
He would reappear in Kaikohe Youth Court on October 28.
Graham said police "understand how distressing this offending was".
"Everyone has the right to feel safe in their own home. This violent, senseless offending has no place in our community, and those responsible will be held to account," he said.
