Two killed, two injured in Far North crash

Two people have died and two others were injured — one critically — after a two-vehicle crash in the Far North near Kaitāia last night.

Emergency services were called to Oruru Rd near Jason Rd in Peria at about 8pm on Wednesday.

"Sadly, two people were located deceased at the scene," a police spokesperson said.

"Two others were transported to hospital, one in a critical condition and one with serious injuries."

The road was closed while the serious crash unit examined the scene but had since been reopened.

Peria is located around 25km east of Kaitāia and south of Taipa.

Fatal crash in Palmerston North

Another person died in a two-vehicle crash in Palmerston North overnight.

Police said it was called to the State Highway 3 and James Line intersection at around 2.40am after the crash involving a car and a motorcycle.

"Sadly, the motorcyclist was confirmed deceased at the scene," police said.

The State Highway 3 and James Line intersection was briefly closed while the serious crash unit conducted a scene examination, but had since reopened.

Inquiries into the circumstances of both crashes were ongoing, police said.
