Police are seeking the public's help finding the family of a World War 1 soldier whose medals were found in Christchurch.
The medals of Private Victor Powell were found during a search of a property on an unrelated matter, Detective Sergeant Jason Hunuki said.
Police, with help from Medals Reunited NZ, discovered Powell was born in 1892 in the Far North and enlisted in 1916. He was sent to Egypt with the 12th Reinforcements as part of the 1st Battalion, Auckland Infantry Regiment (1/AIR).
He was killed in action in France at the age of 25.
Powell was remembered on the Herekino War Memorial in Northland and in the Hall of Memories at the Auckland War Memorial museum.

"We are now wanting to return these medals to the family of Powell," Hunuki said.
"These medals are an important part of New Zealand's history, and would be even more so to Powell's family."
Hunuki said if police were unable to reunite the medals with Powell's family, they would find a new home at the National Army Museum in Waiouru.
Anyone who believes they are a family member of Powell or knows someone who is has been asked to contact Medals Reunited NZ through their website. Anyone with information on the medals can contact police on 105.
