A woman found dead at a home in Christchurch's Edgeware yesterday has been formally named, as a man was charged with her murder.

Officers were called to a Purchas St property just before 6am on Wednesday. The woman was found dead and a homicide investigation was launched.

The woman was this evening named as 37-year-old Sarah Megan Brown.

"Police extend our deepest condolences to her family and friends.

"Enquiries into the circumstances of her death remain ongoing."

Detective Senior Sergeant Colin Baillie earlier today said a 52-year-old man had been taken into custody at the scene, and a murder charge was laid overnight.

"He has been remanded in custody and is due to reappear in the Christchurch District Court on October 16," he said.

Police have cordoned off an address in Christchurch's Edgeware.

Police are not seeking anybody else over the death.

"A scene guard remains in place at the address while police complete a scene examination," Bailie said.

Residents, one of whom said there was a party the night before the woman's body was found, can expect an ongoing police presence in the area as inquires continue.
