New Zealand actor Cliff Curtis has suffered internal injuries after a collision with another vehicle in Auckland last week.

A statement released on behalf of Curtis revealed the crash happened on September 23.

The 58-year-old was injured in the collision but helped provide first aid to other people immediately afterwards until emergency services arrived, the statement read.

Curtis said he was "deeply saddened" by what had happened.

"My thoughts are with those who were hurt, and their families at this time."

The statement said Curtis was "collaborating fully with relevant authorities" and would not make any further comment out of respect for the process.

Curtis, who was born in Rotorua, had enjoyed a lengthy career in both New Zealand and Hollywood film and television.

His New Zealand film credits included Once Were Warriors, Whale Rider and The Dark Horse, while internationally he had starred in films such as Training Day, Blow, Three Kings and the Avatar franchise.
