Police were led on a chase through South Auckland by a man on an allegedly stolen forklift this morning.
Police were called to a commercial yard in Wiri at around 5am after workers saw a man slip through an open gate and get into a truck.
When staff confronted the man, he jumped out of the truck and onto a nearby forklift, smashing through the yard's gates.
“Luckily, he has not hit any workers who were in the yard at the time,” Senior Sergeant Clint McCarthy said.
The forklift continued down Roscommon Rd, with the eagle police helicopter tracking it to Waymouth.
It was eventually spiked, travelling a short distance before stopping on Hazards Rd.
Police said the driver tried to run but "surrendered quickly" once officers arrived and he was taken into custody.
A 39-year-old was charged with burglary, unlawful taking of a motor vehicle, failing to stop, driving while disqualified and driving with excess breath alcohol.
He was due to appear in the Manukau District Court today.
“It’s a miracle no one was hurt, this was reckless behaviour and this man will now face the consequences of his actions in court,” McCarthy said
