Roads closed, hotel evacuated in central Dunedin after 'gas leak'

A hotel was evacuated with road closures in place in central Dunedin following a suspected gas leak this afternoon.

Fire and Emergency NZ said crews from St Kilda, Lookout Point, Roslyn, Dunedin and Willowbank responded to a suspected gas leak at Scenic Hotel Dunedin City on Princes St at around 3pm.

"On arrival we found a faulty transformer was producing gas," a FENZ spokesperson told 1News.

FENZ said the Scenic Hotel was evacuated and nearby roads were closed while crews worked at the scene.

There were no reports of injuries.

Road closures remained in place on Princes St and Downing St.

Police advised motorists to take alternative routes and avoid the area if possible.

Hato Hone St John said it was notified on an incident on Princes St but was not required to respond.
