Former late-night talk show host Stephen Colbert says he's a "criminal in New Zealand" after recently being pulled over for speeding.
Speaking on Jimmy Kimmel Live a day after winning an Emmy for the cancelled Late Night with Stephen Colbert show, the American comedian called Aotearoa "the loveliest country".
"You can throw a dart anywhere on the map. It’s so beautiful that you say, ‘I should just live here and be a man’ because it’s very wild. It’s very, very beautiful and the people make everyone else in the world seem like jerks. They’re incredibly nice.”
Colbert went on to say he was now "criminal in New Zealand" after he was pulled over for speeding 45km/h on a 30km/h zone while picking up his wife and son from the airport.
"I haven’t been pulled over since I was in high school.”
He said Kiwi cops were "the nicest people in the world".
"I’m sure they’re very effective but this Kiwi cop pulled me over. I never got his name, and I got the ticket and I paid the ticket and ... I just can't impress upon you how nice they are while they also give you a ticket at the same time."
Colbert then re-enacted the interaction with his son John playing the officer – affecting a pseudo-Kiwi accent.
He was fined $80 and received 20 demerit points on his licence.
